The Resurrection Plant Or Rose Of Jericho

P1030245Autumn  & I got up and got ready like normal this morning.  Dad didn’t come to bring us doughnuts, so I was worried something had happened to him.  But, he showed up just a few minutes before we left.  He brought doughnuts and we shared some of our yogurt/cereal mixture with him.  I’ve found a great help for my hellish hemorrhoids.  I mix 1/2 c of grape nuts cereal w/ a little carton of yogurt and let it sit for a few minutes to soften the grape nuts.  They are so full of fiber that it helps a lot.

P1030251 After work/school, Autumn & I went over to Mom & Dad’s house.  Mom & Autumn & I went and picked up some of Dad’s white shirts from the dry cleaner’s and then went to McDonald’s for dinner.  Mom & I sat and talked while Autumn played.  Dad came and met us there after he got done with work and then we came home.  Dad & Britt had gone to Oktoberfest earlier today for some Britt & Kerry time.  Dad found this little plant called a Resurrection Plant or Rose of Jericho (that is a cool link b/c it has a super speed video of how it absorbs water in 10 seconds).  Here is what the little paper that came with the plant says:

“This amazing plant that originates from prehistoric times and has the ability to come back from the dead.  When you first look at it, it appears to be just a big ball of dry, crisp leaves and rocks; and, if you crush them in your hand they would turn into dust.  But, this plant has some very special properties.

When you place it into a bowl of water, something almost unbelievable happens.  the plant actually comes back to life.  It absorbs the water, uncurling its fronds and overnight unravels itself to become a lush, green fern again.

The magic with this plant is that if you let it dry out it just backs up into a ball, re-immerse it into water and it comes back to life yet again.”

So, we tried it out.  We put the small looking tumbleweed type thing in a bowl of water and you can see how it starts soaking up the water right away.

P1030252 This is what it looks like after 30 minutes of soaking in water.

P1030254 This is what it looks like after an hour.  It was amazing to see it unfurl.

P1030258 We spent the rest of the evening watching the BYU football game and I’m glad we won in the end, even though it didn’t look like we would win for a while.  It was already 10:30 at night, which I couldn’t believe.  Autumn wanted to spend the night in Nate’s bed so she could have waffles in the morning w/ Papa.  This is what our Rose of Jericho looked like in the morning after soaking overnight!  Pretty cool, huh?
