I was hoping that Autumn would sleep in today since we went to bed late last night. No such luck. She woke up at 7:10 and wanted to watch Jem. So, I woke up and put it on for her and edited pictures so I could blog them. When Mom finally woke up around 9:00, we started making rouladen. I was using this little crank machine to slice the onions really thin, and it felt like someone had put bleach in my eyes (not that I know what that feels like). They hurt so bad and I just felt like scratching my eyes out. That’s why my eyes look so puffy here. The only thing that helped ease some of the pain was wetting a paper towel and blotting my eyes w/ it. Anyways, we had a great assembly line going and got the rouladen done super fast and put in the oven.
Aunt Jana & Uncle Keith brought these cute Halloween bags full of goodies and treats for Autumn & Andrew. All of the kids warmed right up to all the aunts & uncles b/c I think they can sense that they’re grandparents and love little kids. After breakfast, Jon did adjustments but I didn’t post the pictures I took b/c Aunt Jill didn’t want me to b/c we were all in our jammies still.
Mom & Jana & I made homemade caramel popcorn and 2 dozen deviled eggs to snack on and to take some over to Curt & Mary for watching baby Jackson while we were at the BYU football game. Once we finally cleared out of the kitchen, the kids wanted Dad to make smoothies, so they did and had to cover their ears since it’s so loud.
After they were all hopped up on sugar, we sent them outside to enjoy the perfect weather and burn off some energy by riding their scooters. Andrew put his helmet on backwards and insisted on wearing it that way.
We basically spent the whole morning cooking. We cooked rouladen, mashed potatoes, gravy, German red cabbage, and sautéed zucchini & yellow crook neck squash! It was all worth it when we all sat down to the table together to eat. We even had to put the 2 leafs in it so everyone could fit. This might just seem like an ordinary picture, but this represents so much to me. This is more than just a family sitting down to eat. This is memories, love, history, strengthened relationships, etc. It almost felt like Thanksgiving to me b/c my heart was so full of gratitude. I have such an incredible family, both immediate and extended. And what’s even better is that we truly love each other and get along.
Even though we were all stuffed to the brim and had to undo our pants, we had to have dessert. This picture is dark on the right hand side b/c something was over the flash. But, Lexie & Jon brought this Mexican vanilla cake up from the Cake Plate, which is my ultimate favorite and I’m quite the cake connoisseur. Everyone sang Happy Birthday to me and then we dug in.
I had to run home and shower really fast, change into church clothes, and rush to church. I got there just in time to teach my class. It was a lesson about being honest, and was a story from Acts 4:32-5:10 that I don’t remember ever hearing before. Basically, the Church had asked its members to sell their lands and property and give the money to the Church so they could distribute the extra to people who are poor. Basically, it was the law of consecration. Barnabas did as he was asked to do and was blessed. However, Ananias and his wife, Sapphira, sold their land but then both separately lied to Peter when he asked them how much they sold the land for. They kept part of the money for themselves, and when they lied to Peter they both died right on the spot! I asked my kids if they would be more honest if they knew that telling a lie could kill them on the spot. We ended class a little early so we could go outside and have popsicles. That was the treat I brought them for bringing their scriptures (and using them) for the past 2 months. They’re always too talkative, but they’re good kids and I love teaching them.
I left after teaching so I could stop by the hospital and see Liz & Baby Jacob. I feel so bad that it took me 2 days to go see them, but the timing just wasn’t right until now. When I got there, Liberty was feeding him from a little tube and would put his pinkie finger in Jacob’s mouth and every time he sucked, Liberty would give him a little milk from the tube. They are trying to teach him to eat so Liz can breastfeed him, b/c he hasn’t wanted to yet. It is so cute to see them as parents!
He didn’t have on any clothes, b/c he has jaundice and has to be on the bili bed. He is just too precious, has so much hair, fat cute cheeks, and he makes me so baby hungry. He is adorable and I am thrilled for them.
I came home and everyone was taking naps or watching football. Mom & Jana & I made eggrolls, sweet & sour sauce, and fried rice for dinner b/c Uncle Rick & Aunt Jana wanted to see how they were made. It’s a lot of work, but went fast b/c we got our assembly line going again. After eating, we got out another puzzle. Autumn came over to help but ended up being less than helpful. I told her to go find something else to do and she crawled under the table to sulk. Next thing I know, it had been too quiet for too long. I looked under the table and she had fallen asleep on the floor!!! I let her sleep for a while and then woke her up so she’d go back to sleep tonight. I was getting a headache, so Autumn & I came home at 9:00. I gave her a breathing treatment and we watched a little TV in bed and then went to bed at 10:00.
It has been such a fun whirlwind of a week. We have been eating and laughing and having fun non-stop. I am so sad that Jana and Keith & Jill and Rick are all going home tomorrow. I love it when we have family come visit b/c we get to strengthen the bonds we have by making fun memories together. I really need to make a trip up to Utah sometime soon to see the rest of the extended family (on both sides).
