Doughnuts, Curls & Rain

IMG_7748 This morning Autumn & I were crazy and woke up at 6:00 (an hour and a half earlier than we usually do) to go get doughnuts at a super good doughnut place.  We took them to seminary to surprise Dad & his class, since I forgot to do it yesterday.  Dad’s birthday just sneaked up on me and for some reason I was thinking it was later on in the week.  Little did I know, he had taken in one of the banana cream pies that Mom had made last night, so they weren’t as hungry for doughnuts as they would usually be.  Dad used the banana cream pie as an object lesson.

They were talking about D&C 9 where Oliver Cowdrey wants the Lord to give him the gift of translation just like Joseph Smith had.  The last part of the lesson I heard was from vs. 7 where the Lord tells Oliver, “Behold, you have not understood; you have supposed that I would give it unto you, when you took no thought save it was to ask me.”  He likened that to our lives (and especially the kids in his class) by asking how many of them have prayed for help before taking a test?  All the kids raised their hands.  He then asked if they had studied hard and prepared before taking that test.  Some raised their hands and some didn’t.  He said that we have to be willing to put in the time and effort and hard work ourselves before we ask the Lord to help us.  How can the Lord help you remember the things you studied for the test if you never put in the effort to learn and study them in the first place?  The Lord wants us to ask for His help, but we have to do our part first!

He compared that to Mom & learning to make banana cream pie.  She had to ask Grandma Johnson for the recipe, watch her make it multiple times, and then make it herself several times before she got it right.  It was a good object lesson and definitely made an impact on me.

IMG_7750 She could not keep staring at herself in the mirror and thought she was hot stuff.  I do have to admit that she looked pretty dang cute w/ those big curls.  She was super excited to go show her teacher her “pretty hair.”

IMG_3106 After work, Mom called and said to just meet her & Nick at Cheddar’s b/c Dad had some class he had to go to for Continuing Education Credits and they were going to have food there for him and she wanted to go out to eat.  I LOVE eating at Cheddars.  I know I say that all the time, but look at how good (and healthy) this is!  They have HUGE portions and it’s so reasonably priced ($7.99).  I was so full I couldn’t even eat one of the chicken breasts and took it home to have for lunch tomorrow.  Autumn ate ALL (except for the 2 I was able to get) of my carrots b/c they were so sweet and flavorful.

IMG_3109I had to run out to my car 1/2 way through dinner to put my windows up b/c a storm was coming in and it was about to rain.  It’s a good thing I did, b/c about 15 minutes later, the heavens opened up and it started POURING.  We had to run as fast as we could to our cars, but still got soaked.  Autumn was laughing like crazy and thought it was the funniest thing ever.  This was what our drive on the way to Mom’s house looked like…dark stormy rain clouds but then underneath that and a few miles east you can see it was bright and sunny!  I LOVE me some big Texas rain/thunder storms.  They just make me happy.  I opened up the blinds in the living room when we got to Mom’s house so I could watch the storm in between watching TV.  It was a nice and peaceful evening.
