GNO: The Help

P1020943 Today at work it was so slow, so I found a book that looked interesting on onread.com.  It’s called Nineteen Minutes and is really good so far and has really made me think.  I couldn’t wait for 5:00 to come so it would be that much closer to our GNO.  I got Autumn & we went to Mom & Dad’s and had mac & cheese for dinner and then Liz came over and we left to go to the theater.  We got there 30 minutes early b/c Mom had gone to another movie earlier in the day and she had asked how many tickets had sold for the show tonight.  The girl told her only 7 tickets had been sold, so we figured it wouldn’t be very full.  We were wrong.  There were TWO long lines when we got there, so we got in line and when we finally got into the theater, we were barely able to snag seats together at the back on the right hand side.  Mom got drinks and then popcorn for us to share.  It ended up being Liz, Melanie, Mary, Christine, Mom, Karri & I.

P1020944The movie was kind of slow at the beginning, but then finally got going.  There were some really funny parts and parts where I cried.  Celia & Minny are my favorite characters.  I have to admit that I liked the book much more than the movie.  The movie didn’t have enough detail and didn’t develop the story or the characters nearly enough.  I was kind of hoping it would be equal to Steel Magnolias, which I didn’t feel it was.  But I’m still so glad I saw it and will definitely buy it when it comes out on video.

The best part of all, was being there w/ such wonderful women.  If I had the resources to do it, I would have loved to fly all my friends in and rent out a whole theater and watch it all together.  Girl friends from college, from my mission, girl’s I’ve worked with over the years, extended family, etc.  I walked out of that movie feeling so grateful to be a strong southern woman and knowing that I have such close and precious friendships with other incredible women.

I was shocked that it was already 10:15 when we got out of the movie!  I didn’t realize it was so late, so we rushed home and Dad was not happy that Autumn was up so late, so I grabbed her and we came home and went right to sleep.  That was really nice of Dad & the boys to watch her for me so I could go out with my girl friends and not have to worry about Autumn.

“Oh, it was delicious to have someone to keep secrets with.  Someone whose eyes simply said, without words, ‘You are fine with me.’”

“You is kind. You is smart. You is important.”
