Three Scoops…The Magic Words

P1030330 This morning Autumn & I slept in until 8:30, which was GLORIOUS!  I did quite a few loads of laundry, which included washing Nick’s mattress pad, sheets, towels, and shirts.  I then made his bed for him b/c he’s just been sleeping on a blanket on his mattress for the past few nights.  Since I was putting nice clean sheets on his bed, I wanted nice clean sheets on mine too, so I stripped my bed and put new sheets on.  In between doing all of that, I watched the last 1/2 of Les Miserables (the one with Liam Neeson & Claire Danes) on TV.  I remember when I saw it, when it first came out, that I didn’t like how it ended.  But, I watched it again today and thought it was really good.

After sacrament meeting today, I didn’t have to teach a lesson b/c we were practicing the Primary Program.  Since there are only 2 kids in my class still left in Primary, I helped direct the little kids off the stage and back to their seats after they said their part.  Autumn’s part is, “I will return to live with Heavenly Father.”  I’m going to work with her over the next few weeks to memorize it so she can just walk up to the microphone and say it.

After church, we went to Mom & Dad’s house for a few hours.  We watched football and Autumn played w/ her dolls.  Autumn got really upset over nothing, so I knew she was tired.  She stomped off into the other room and I thought she was in Mom & Dad’s room watching Jem.  I went to check on her, and found her curled up asleep on the couch in the formal living room.

P1030331I felt bad, b/c she fell asleep around 6:00 and I had to wake her up at 6:40 so we could go home for the Home Teachers to come over at 7:00.  She was a BEAR when I woke her up, but I was expecting that so I just let her cry it out on the ride home.  Our Home Teachers came, and I appreciate them so much.  They are so good w/ Autumn and making the lesson easy for her to understand.  After they left, we watched Drop Dead Diva and then I put Autumn to bed.  Then I watched Long Island Medium and finally Sister Wives.

I started up a new thing w/ Autumn at church today.  She was being silly and obnoxious during sacrament, so I told her if she was good, then she could have 3 scoops of ice cream and if she was acting up or wouldn’t listen to me when I asked her to stop, then she would lose a scoop.  Boy, that sobered her right up and she was good the rest of the day.  If she started being crazy or too loud, I would just hold up 2 fingers instead of 3 and she would straighten up right away.  It worked like a charm.  So, I made sure to follow through and give her 3 scoops of ice cream after dinner b/c she had earned them.  I think this might have to become a weekly tradition, and I’ll just have to make sure I buy ice cream on Saturdays so we have some on Sunday.

We know a family who did something like that with their kids when they were growing up and it worked really well. They'd scoop out the starting number of scoops in each kid's bowl, and then if they lost one (for being naughty at church, for example) they'd put it back so the kids would see what they could have had. I don't know how well that'd go over with Autumn now, but they said it was pretty effective! :)
