Memorial Day Monday 2012

This morning we woke up at 6:30, b/c there was sunlight streaming in through the windows of the tree house.  I’ll have to tell Curt to tell Mary to make some cheap & easy curtains to put up in the windows. J/K.  Anyways, we got up and got dressed and went over to Mom & Dad’s to put away our stuff and so Andrew could get some clothes.  Then we came to our house so I could get dressed.  We went over to the church for a Memorial Day breakfast at 8:00 am.  Autumn insisted on bringing her stuffed dog and dressed it in some of her clothes.  We had breakfast burritos and they were really good.  The kids had fun running around, and it never ceases to amaze me how easily kids make friends.  Autumn went off to play w/ someone and I was worried about Andrew being by himself b/c he didn’t know anyone.  But he just joined a group of boys that were playing w/ sticks in the dirt and acted like he’d known them his whole life.  Anyways, we weren’t able to stay for the flag ceremony b/c we needed to get home so I could help Mom get ready for the shrimp boil.

When we pulled up, Dad was out in the garden and had the kids help him get red potatoes to use in the shrimp boil.

I was helping Mom and someone had left an opened can of soda on the counter, so I picked it up and started drinking it.  All of a sudden, I felt something on my lip and looked down to see this big old fly crawling on my lip!  I screamed and freaked out and threw the can in the sink.  I kept rubbing my lip to try and get the feeling of that fly crawling on it to go away.  I also rinsed my mouth out w/ water a few times and tried not to think about how that fly probably pooped and peed in the soda I just drank.  EEEWWWWW!

Dad & the kids brought in a bunch of potatoes & also zucchini from the garden.  So, Mom & Lexie & I got an assembly line going and we made fried zucchini for brunch.  We make a good team.

Lexie & Jon found an incredible deal on some out of season Easter baskets, and gave one to Autumn.  It had this purple guitar, microphone, and headband.  She thought she was a total rock star and was happy to sing to us and put on a small concert.  Let’s just say I’m glad the tickets were free.  LOL!

Finally at noon it was time to swim.  The kids had been asking all morning.  Mom had gotten them water shoes so they don’t tear up the bottom of their feet on the pool.  She also got them goggles to use while swimming.  They looked so funny w/ their squished faces b/c of the goggles.

We had a shrimp boil & were so glad that Maggie & Jocey & Sariah joined us.  we all ate until our tummies were stuffed.  Then we broke the old wives’ tale and went swimming w/ out waiting 30 minutes.  I just sat on a pool noodle in the deep end while the kids jumped off the board over and over and over.  I can’t believe they weren’t worn out after 20 minutes.

I had to leave at 2:30 to go get my nails done, plus Lexie & Jon & the boys left to go home.  It probably doesn’t seem like a very Memorial Day type of thing to do, but that was when I really got a chance today to pause and think about what today is all about.  They had a national news channel on at the nail salon and they kept showing patriotic scenes, soldiers, various wars, etc.  I am thankful that my Dad served and that Nate is currently serving.  I also have a lot of cousins that are in the military.

After I got my nails done, I went next door to the kids’ consignment store and scored some GREAT deals for Autumn Bottom.  I went to Mom & Dad’s house and we just vegged and relaxed for the most of the evening.  Autumn & I left to go to WalMart to get some groceries and then home to get ready for the coming week.  Today felt like Sunday, even though I know it’s not, b/c tomorrow is the start of my work week.
