Cupcakes For My Cupcake

IMG_3020 Today after work, I got Autumn Bottom and we were headed over to Mom & Dad’s. Everyday, we drive past a cake shop that a lady that used to be in our ward owns. She makes AH-MAZING cakes, and I have always wondered if she makes cupcakes, too. So, today was the day we finally stopped and went in to see what she had. Sure enough, she had cupcakes! So, we got 3 different kinds (but only 3 b/c they were $1.50 each)!!! Autumn wanted to hold them but I told her she could ONLY if she were really careful w/ them. I have no idea what face she is making here (it looks like she’s constipated or something).

IMG_3021 Mom made some YUMMY Thai chicken & noodles for dinner. For dessert we had our cupcakes. The brown/white one was a rum cake type thing and the pink one in the back was wedding cake flavored.

IMG_3022 This one was a lemon flavored cupcake (w/ the wedding cake one in the back again b/c it was our favorite looking one).

IMG_3024 Of course Autumn wanted the pink one. It was pretty tasty and she LOVED it (I think mostly b/c of the pink wrapper).

IMG_3027 Mom & Dad had gone to Hobby Lobby earlier today to get an 11x14 frame for Nate’s military picture. He looks SO HANDSOME! Mom was wearing her purple “Air Force Mom” shirt and hat. I asked her if anyone said anything to her and she said the little old lady in front of her in line said something and so did the lady behind her. Then, the guy at the cashier’s counter said he was going into the military in a few weeks and he had kind of longer hair so Mom told him, “I hope you are ready to lose all of your hair and get a buzz cut!” LOL!

IMG_3030 We spent the rest of the evening watching last week’s Project Runway that we missed last week b/c we were in San Antonio, and then we watched the one for this week. I really like ??????????? as a designer, but don’t like her as a person. I thought that was crazy how she went from saying everyone on her team was all together to then saying she was just trying to salvage a crappy collection (especially since she was the ring leader of that group and seemed to make most of the decisions).

Autumn is definitely her Mimi’s granddaughter and her Mama’s daughter b/c she LOVES having her hair brushed and played with as much as Mom & I do. It’s one of our favorite things ever. She went and got her brush and had Mom brush her hair. I love this look of pure enjoyment on her face as Mom brushes her hair. She’s a girl after my own heart.

Maile over at Daily Relish Photos posted a link to some colored pictures from the 1930s-1940s. They are SO COOL looking and really made me stop and think that even though most of the pictures we see from that time period are black and white, those people had real lives that were lived in color. And even though they had lots of struggles, don’t we all? There were a few pictures that really stood out to me (although I thought all of them were provoking).

#15~ A bunch of kids taking a rest on a bed. The families back then had kids that were had their “bad days” just like Autumn does, and times when she’s reached her limit and just needs a little break.
#16~ A normal family that was just doing their best to make it through each day and raise children as best as they could. I find it interesting that there is a picture of a really pretty lady in the background right above the Mom. She is so far from looking like the lady in the picture, but I’m sure she had dreams of having the luxury of getting her hair done and having nice dresses (just like so many of the women today…we want to look like certain celebrities and have hopes that someday we’ll have enough $ to get our hair done every month and buy the clothes and shoes we want).
#20~ Kids singing, but notice how 1/2 of them aren’t even wearing shoes!
#42~ Kids back then knew how to keep themselves entertained for hours by playing outside instead of having to have TV or XBox. Kids nowadays have lost that ability to imagine and make a game out of nothing to a large degree.
#46~ Just looks really cool and shows the industry and hard work of the time period.
#54~ Women working as hard as the men. You can see the hard work and stress in their faces. Even though they don’t look pretty and aren’t wearing any make up, they knew their value and worth weren’t based on outward appearances. They were needed and were there!
#55~ Kids at a patriotic celebration. Even though times were hard, they took time to celebrate the important things.

'Woman #66~ MY FAVORITE! I would love to have this picture printed off and framed in my house. I love the look on her face, the fact that she has her nails painted and that the paint is chipped (so she’s a girly girl) yet she is hard at work using a power tool, she’s a curvy girl, you can see her reflection in the sheet metal she’s working on, etc. I don’t know, this picture just speaks to me.

It makes me wonder if people 80 years from now will look back at our pictures and think about how different things are wonder what our lives were like? Interesting thought!

Which one is your favorite?

Wow thanks for this post Lisa! These photos were fascinating to look at, and being in color really does make them seem more "real". I like the homesteader family photos as well, #16 & #17 - you can see little curtains up on the windows - the moms were trying to make their homes cozy and comfy, even if they did have dirt and plywood walls. They did the best they could with what they had - I need to remember that more often!

I love this photo as well, she is all of us all our moms and grandmas. Feminine but strong, dutiful and beautiful.
