Laboring On Labor Day

IMG_3374 This morning we got up and had some breakfast and then got dressed in grubby clothes and went outside to “help” Dad.  We didn’t really do anything other than watch him and ask if we could help in anyway.  He had to dig a big hole around the pipe that was leaking.

IMG_3379 Then he turned on the water and had me take a picture so we could show the city that there truly was a leak.  We think what happened is that it’s been so dang hot and the ground has been so dry that the pipe came loose.  Dad cut off the broken part so he could go to Lowes and get some replacement parts.

IMG_3385 While he was tinkering around w/ the pipes, he noticed this little gecko that blended right in with the dirt.  I didn’t know geckos lived in the ground.  We have a bunch of them in the eaves of the house at night, and I’m glad b/c they eat bugs and I think they’re cute.

IMG_3390 Since it was super nice weather outside (in the mid 80’s with a light breeze), I decided to do some yard work.  Shocking, I know.  I got out the edger b/c we got a note from the Home Owner’s Association basically saying we need to edge our yard.  But, the blade was too dull and didn’t do anything so I got out the weed wacker instead.  Dad showed me how to do it on the left side of the lawn.  Then he left to go get parts and I tried edging on the right side of the lawn.  Ummmmm…yeah.  Not even close to being straight like Dad’s.  He makes it look so easy and it’s not.  Now we’re going to get a note from the HOA that they DON’T want us to edge our lawn anymore and that we should just pay someone to do it for us b/c I made it look worse that it did before.  I told Dad he has a yard dufus for a daughter!  LOL!

IMG_3391 Autumn had fun going in and out of the house w/ various things like this glitter wand I didn’t even remember that she had.  It was nice enough outside that we could leave the front door open and not have to keep saying, “shut the door, you’re letting out all the cold air.”

IMG_3394 She wanted to go over to the duck ponds, and we haven’t been there in forever.  We had some crusty left over bread that we took to feed to the ducks.  It was super windy (you can see where the wind is blowing the big spray in the middle to the south) and there were no ducks around.  But, that didn’t stop Autumn and she still threw small pieces of bread into the water for the fish and turtles.

We went back to the house and Dad stopped by to say he had to go into work and would get the parts to fix the leak after work.  Autumn and I got ready to go over to Mom & Dad’s and drove past the neighbor’s house that also had a leak and there were some guys in front of his house working on his leak.  I talked to them to see if they could come down to my house and look at my leak.  The supervisor did and said it would be $220 to fix it.

I called Dad and had the supervisor talk to him since I know nothing about plumbing and what would be a fair price.  The guy automatically dropped the price to $120 when he talked to Dad and Dad since he had done most of the hard work and found the leak and dug the hole he would pay $100.  So, the supervisor went and got the stuff to fix it and he and his guys came over and fixed it and put back all the grass and dirt.  I went out and took them some popsicles and told them I would offer them some water to drink but I didn’t have any.

Ricardo, the supervisor, came in the house and ran the water in the kitchen sink to flush out any dirt or air in the line.  All of a sudden, the water pressure dropped and was barely a trickle.  Poor Ricardo spent the next 20 minutes taking the hose off the kitchen sink faucet.  He was finally able to flush a few tiny little rocks out of the hose.  It made me think of kidney stones.  LOL!

IMG_3398We finally made it over to Mom & Dad’s house at 2:30.  I felt bad b/c Nick & Jocey Monzingo had come over to swim and play and eat, but no one was around but Mom.  And by the time Autumn & I got there, they had to leave for a young single adult party.  So, it ended up just being Mom & Dad & Autumn & I (Nick had to work).  We grilled Ollie North chicken and corn on the cob.  After we ate, I went to get in the pool with Autumn and it was COLD!  That makes me sad b/c I’ve hardly been swimming at all this summer.

IMG_3401 I just had to get a picture of this, b/c this is a first…Dad letting us have food in the pool.  Mom had cut up some watermelon and cantaloupe and he put the bowl in the water and was feeding Mom & Autumn from the bowl.  I was saying too bad we didn’t have the coconut bar that we gave to Tyler for his birthday, b/c we could have used that.

IMG_3405 We finally got out b/c I was getting a little sunburned (and it felt so good after a summer of not swimming) and there was this big beetle on the ground that looked like it was dying.  So, we decided to put it out of its misery and threw it into the web of the zipper spider.  The spider was on that beetle in less than a second and had it all cocooned and wrapped up in 30 seconds.  It was so creepy yet fascinating at the same time.

P1030114 Autumn and I ran home really quick to get some crossiant dough out of the fridge and then went over to Deckers at 5:00 for dinner.  Karri invited us to come over b/c she was making a huge pot of minestrone soup.  It was macaroni noodles, meat, carrots, green beans, kidney beans, garbanzo beans, and spices.  She also had a big bowl of strawberries, raspberries and blueberries.  It was so healthy and good.  She also had some rice crispy treats w/ M&M’s for a treat.  After we ate, the girls went upstairs to play and Karri and I sat and talked.  It was so good to talk to her, b/c I miss our Monday night get togethers and don’t really get a chance to talk with her at church.  The girls came down the stairs pretending to ride these stuffed horses.  They had such a good time playing outside in the perfect weather.

P1030115 They ran back upstairs and then came down wearing these cute dress up outfits.  I’m so thankful that Kylie and Kenzie don’t mind playing with Autumn, b/c she ADORES them and thinks they are the coolest girls ever.  We finally packed up and headed home at 7:30, even though Autumn wanted to stay and play at their house forever.  I don’t blame her, I could stay at Karri’s all day b/c it’s so homey and inviting, and it is always immaculately clean.  Plus, the company makes it even better!

P1030117 Since it was so nice outside, Autumn & I went outside and sat on our front steps and ate a popsicle.  We were going to go on a walk, but it was getting dark too fast and the mosquitoes are vicious.  Autumn looks so blah in this picture, but I think she was just tired from partying all day.  We went in the house and I gave her a bath and then put her to sleep.  Since it was still fairly early I watched The Secret Life of Bees b/c I didn’t get to see the whole thing when Mom & I watched it on TV at the hotel.

The movie and being at Karri’s house made me wish like I had a more open and welcoming personality and home.  Mom & Dad’s home is like that too…everyone feels welcome there and likes to be there.  I’ll get a chance to do that this Saturday.  Rachel from my ward called to see if I could host a brunch for the Relief Society sisters at my house on Saturday after our ward Relief Society temple trip.  I kind of laughed and the first thing I said was, “You know where I live, right?”  There are some people in my ward that live in huge and gorgeous homes so I couldn’t understand why they would want to have it at my house b/c I don’t have a very big living room.  But Rachel assured me that yes, they wanted to have it at my house and told me I didn’t have to provide any food, just let them have the brunch at my house.  I was still kind of hesitant b/c I have those 2 sets of furniture in my living room, but I figured I could just move the living room furniture around and use that 2nd set for more seating.  I finally said yes and realized maybe they just wanted to give me a good excuse to clean my house.   LOL!  I am actually really excited about it and am looking forward to it.
