Iced In

IMG_1816 Rosy Posy tried to be sneaky today and hide herself behind a bunch of Autumn’s bows.

IMG_1817 I could hear the ice pellets hitting the window as I fell asleep last night, so I wasn’t surprised to wake up to this white winter wonderland.

IMG_1822 A lot of people make fun of us Texans and say that we’re such wimps just b/c it gets cold.  They say we can’t drive in the snow.  What they don’t understand is that this isn’t snow … I know how to drive in snow b/c I lived in Utah for a long time.  This is NOT snow.  This is pure ice that you can’t drive on.

IMG_1829 Dad was SO SAD to see that his Live Oak in the front yard had split and a huge portion broke off b/c of the weight of the ice.  He went around w/ a rake and was hitting the other branches on the tree to keep those from breaking off.  We had a few other trees in the back yard that had some broken branches as well.

IMG_1831 Look at how the ice froze on these trees.  It’s crazy!!!

IMG_1840 Dad found these 2 frozen geckos outside, so we put them in a ventilated jar in the house to warm them up.  We were hoping they would be OK once they got warm, but they weren’t.  So sad for the poor geckos … we tried.

dallas 1 There were a few funny things like this floating around on Facebook today.  Luckily we didn’t get any more precipitation today.  The bad part is that the temps are going to stay below freezing for at least 80 hours, so the ice won’t be melting.  School was cancelled, I worked from home, and the crèche was cancelled too.  It’s SO MUCH WORK, so they’re going to keep it up and have people come through on Monday & Tuesday.

IMG_1846 We basically just had a movie day today.  I worked on a puzzle and we watched The Grinch, Elf, Enchanted, and Raising Helen.  I made meatloaf and broccoli for dinner, and then after that I made Aunt Jeri’s famous brownies.  I’m so thankful that we’ve had electricity all day, b/c there are a lot of people (even right here in Mom & Dad’s neighborhood) who are without power.  I never realized how much we depend on it from having hot water to cooking to keeping the house warm, etc.  I’m thankful to have a house that keeps us safe and protected from the elements.  I’m thankful to spend these cooped up days w/ family.  I’m thankful we’re all safe and sound.
