Brownies & A Statue of Liberty Document

IMG_7063 I got up this morning & made 2 batches of brownies. During our Laurel’s class today we went and delivered these to the Teacher’s class (14-15 year old boys). They are in charge of setting up & taking down the sacrament each week. We wanted to let them know that we appreciate them doing that.

IMG_7064 Our home teachers came over tonight right after church. Autumn got to hold one of the world’s smallest full print Bibles. This one is well preserved b/c it had its own case. That circle in the middle is actually a magnifying glass so you can actually read the teeny tiny print. Pretty cool!

IMG_7066 Our home teacher told us a really cool true story about this man. This is General Charles Pomeroy Stone. His life is quite the crazy story. Basically he was imprisoned wrongfully, b/c the Joint Committee of the Conduct of the War wanted to pin the death of one of their colleagues from the battle at Ball’s Bluff on him. He was put in a solitary confinement cell where he couldn’t even stand up! After 7 months in jail he was finally released and b/c of his impressive military & engineering savvy he was able to move up the ranks in the Egyptian Army.

IMG_7065The United States never apologized for the horrible way he was treated, but they asked him to come back and work as an engineer for the Florida Ship Canal Company. Instead of holding a grudge (like he easily could have), he chose to forgive. Because he was so good at his job, he ended up being the Chief Engineer for the construction of the Statue of Liberty! It’s hard to read what Autumn’s holding, but this is the original letter from him requesting the stone for the base!!! General Stone got to be the Grand Marshall of the parade for the dedication of the Statue of Liberty. He died shortly after the dedication. The ironic thing is that the Statue of Liberty was just across the water from the prison where he was held captive for 7 months. It was a great story/lesson about forgiveness & not letting our pride stand in our way.

After the left Autumn & I had dinner and then I took her over to Nate & Riannon’s and they watched her for me while I went to BYD (Bishop’s Youth Discussion). We had a panel of adult guest speakers from the ward come & talk to the youth about education, their jobs, and we also had a Q&A. I thought it was really good & very informative. After it was over I went and got Autumn & came home and got her to bed.
